Quake in J&K rattles Tricity residents

CHANDIGARH: Within a fortnight, there was a third tremor in the city, and this time the epicenter was closer home. While some felt the tremors and rushed out of buildings and apartments, others could hardly feel them, and rushed out only after being informed through calls or after seeing anxious people rushing out. The city had experienced two tremors recently, one on April 16 and another on April 24.
On Wednesday, northern India experienced yet another earthquake, this time its epicenter being the Doda region of Jammu & Kashmir. "The depth of the quake was 15km, and the cause of this quake has been attributed to the shift in tectonic plates. This was the third consecutive earthquake experienced in the northern parts of the country in the past 15 days. The reading on the Richter scale was 5.8 (moderate intensity) at 12:27:12pm," said UT Met director Surinder Paul.
Prasen Jait Paul, a guest in a hotel near Sector 8, said, "I was not sure about it, but I did feel the movement around me. So I rushed out and saw people coming out of their buildings, confirming my doubt. This jolt did have an impact and a hard one, even if only for a few seconds."

'No major steps taken so far to assess earthquake damages in Jammu'

JAMMU: Four days after earthquake rocked the Jammu region, an Congress MLA on Sunday said that no major steps were taken by either the Central government or the state to assess the damages.

"Four days have passed, yet no major steps have been taken by Centre as well state government in assessing the damages in the division," Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, who represents the Inderwal constituency of Kishtwar district, told reporters here.
